What is Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?

Sickle cell disease, or SCD, is an inherited medical condition that affects hemoglobin inside the red blood cells, causing the cells to sickle. Sickled red blood cells can get stuck in the bloodstream, slowing or blocking blood flow and causing problems including pain, tiredness, and swelling.
